- <p> DIED. JAMES BRIDGES, 57, Oscar-nominated writer and director;
- of intestinal cancer; in Los Angeles. Bridges made his feature-film
- writing and directing debut with 1970's The Baby Maker--and
- thereupon embarked on a career distinguished by commercially
- successful projects that stressed solid human drama over cinematic
- virtuosity: The Paper Chase, the story of a Harvard law school
- student that made a latter-day star of John Houseman; Urban
- Cowboy, the movie that made Debra Winger a star and solidified
- the star status of John Travolta; and The China Syndrome, with
- Jane Fonda and Jack Lemmon, a critical look at nuclear power,
- for which Bridges picked up a screenplay Oscar nomination.
